牧之原大茶園

Makinohara Tea Estate

明治2年から始まった徳川の幕臣や大井川の川越人足による開拓で日本一の茶園となった牧之原大茶園。毎年4月下旬～5月上旬にかけての新茶の時期は、茶畑が新芽に覆われ、見渡す限り美しい緑のじゅうたんが広がります。

The Makinohara Tea Estate, which began cultivation in 1869, was developed into the largest tea plantation in Japan by Tokugawa shogunate retainers and so-called kawagoshi ninsoku, laborers who normally worked carrying people across the Oi river. Every year during the new tea season from late April to early May, the fields are covered with new shoots and a beautiful carpet of green spreads as far as the eye can see.
